Celebrating the Centenary of our Church Hall

From 5th-8th July we are holding a Flower Festival to celebrate the Centenary of our Church Hall.  The ‘Parish Rooms’ were completed in 1913 and so we are celebrating one hundred years of presence and service.

The theme for the flower festival is ‘Time’ and we are drawing on the famous Bible passage, Ecclesiastes 3.1-8, which begins “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”  The passage continues listing different times of life and human circumstance.

When we celebrate a centenary we are naturally mindful of a number of years having passed – we are thinking of a length, or quantity, of time.  But this passage speaks more of a quality of time; that there is a right time or fitting season.  So a good question to ask ourselves is not just “What time is it?”, but, “What kind of time is it now?”

For me this is a time to celebrate, a time to remember, and a time to give thanks.  As we celebrate these one hundred years of service to the community of Bournville we can remember all the wide range of events that our Hall has hosted and witnessed:  services, classes, parties, discos, youth groups, play groups, concerts, dinners, talks, fayres and more.  And we give thanks for all those memories and the people who have been part of that story.

I pray that we may continue to build up our service to this community; that we may continue to gather people together in this place; and that, through it all, we may to continue to speak of God’s eternal love.
