BBC Nativity Interview

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Following a Press Release about our life-size nativity under the cloister, BBC reporter Kate Walker came down to St Francis Church to interview some of the young people from FAITHFUL who built it – namely Madeleine, Oliver and Callum. Interviewed along with them were Revd Peter Babington and Mary Rogers.

The broadcast went out live at about 10:45am on Tuesday 23rd December during the Ed Doolan Show on BBC Radio WM. The young people spoke very eloquently about their experience of building the Nativity and what it meant to them to finally see it on display. A very specially thank you goes to them for representing FAITHFUL as well as to all those young people who worked so hard to make the vision a (life-size!) reality.

Youth Round-up: Dec 08

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

It almost seems too early to be writing about December! However, there’s still a lot to fit into this edition of the Youth Worker’s Roundup due to a busy few weeks, so without further ado…

Lunch with the Bishop! – I’m not name-dropping, but it has become an annual tradition for Bishop David to invite all the youth workers from across the Diocese to his house for lunch. As well as a meal he offered us words of encouragement for all that we do on the Church’s behalf in Birmingham. It’s exciting to know that our Bishop has the spiritual welfare of young people very close to his heart. (more…)

(Designed and built by the young people of FAITHFUL)

Devotion to the Crib is of very ancient origin. St Francis of Assisi popularized it around 1220, giving it the form in which it is known today. With the aid of his friends Francis constructed a crib and grouped around it figures of the Blessed Virgin and St Joseph, the ass, the ox, and the shepherds who came to adore the new-born Saviour. Youth Round-up: Nov 08

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Welcome to the Outreach Youth Worker’s latest roundup looking back over the month of November.

Last Ever Reunited – On Saturday 8th a small band of us made a trip to what would be the last ever Reunited at St Martin’s in the Bull Ring. As you may recall Reunited began as gathering for young people to mark the 100 anniversary of the establishing of the Diocese of Birmingham. It has been a popular event, but the Youth Service has decided to support local mission rather than having one big, central gathering. At this particular Reunited Christian Aid were in attendance to talk about their work in the Holy Land and the plight of the very poorest and oppressed peoples of that region. There was also an impressive demonstration of Palestinian folk dancing. (more…)

The Vicar Writes – Winter 2008

Dear Friends,

Advent–Christmas–Epiphany  :  Waiting–Celebrating–Discovering

Advent Sunday this year falls on 30th November and it begins the season of waiting for Christ’s appearing. Above all Advent is a time of preparation. We all immerse ourselves in the practical preparations for celebrating Christmas such as buying presents, baking food and sending cards. Amongst all this busyness it is sometimes a challenge to prepare ourselves for the spiritual dimension of our celebrating of the birth of Jesus. (more…)
