Youth Round-up: Oct 08

Welcome to the Youth Worker’s latest roundup looking back over the month of October.

A Whole Year – Wednesday 29th October marked a year to the day since I started work as the Outreach Youth Worker for St Francis of Assisi. Time has flown, which I think is a good sign, and I’ve certainly been enjoying it. I’m already looking forward to spending the coming year with our young people in the parish, schools and in the community.
Sacred Space – This month saw the start of our Sunday School group for older young people called Sacred Space. It’s a space to “hear and be heard”, to talk about the things that are most important to us, to pray, reflect and hopefully learn to recognise the presence of God in our lives. Please pray for our young people that they might grow deeply in their faith and respond to God’s very special call for each one of them.
St Francis School – I’m very excited to have started going into St Francis School this term on a Friday to spend time with year 6. The idea is that I help support the pupils through their final year and encourage and prepare them for the leap into secondary education. I will be seeing every young person twice a term in groups of 6 or 7. In our first series of sessions we have been looking at identity, gifts and skills.
Quasar – For October’s “FAITH on Tour” we spent the afternoon of Sunday 12th at Quasar in Acocks Green – 28 of us were split into two teams to see who would be crowned individual and team champions in a battle of laser gun-slinging. We had two 20 minute sessions and were well and truly tired out by the end of it – phew!
007 Event – Three local churches came together on 31st October to host a joint youth event on the theme of James Bond as a way of marking the launch of the new film, and as an antidote to Hallowe’en. There was food, fun and games as well as a christian look at how James Bond might (or might not) be a role model for us today. About 60-70 young people attended. Look out for other jointly hosted youth events coming soon.
Bournville Parish Church “Blog” – In this age of instant, superfast communication St Francis’ now has a weblog where you can access sermons, reviews and reflections on parish life. In addition all the Youth Worker’s Roundups from the past year are archived there, as well as write-ups of significant youth events, plus notices and pictures. Simply type www.bournvilleparishchurch.org.uk/blog/ into your internet browser.

Do continue to pray for our young people – none of this could happen without you!

Paul.
