Lentwise – Session 2
The second session for our Lent course focussed on the theme of nourishment and what keeps us going – reflecting on the saying of Jesus “I am the bread of life” (John 6.25-35).
We had some good discussions around the ideas of what nourishes us spiritually: nature, relationships, music, worship and silence were common themes. We also got into some interesting areas of thinking around what Jesus meant by saying that the food which he gives lasts into eternal life. This is the food that nourishes us as we travel on the way to the Father, yet is also gives us a taste of that life in the here and now. There is a now-and-not-yet experience of eternal life as we eat the bread that Jesus gives. And although it is satisfying we do still want more. What did Jesus mean saying that when we come to him we will never be hungry? We all felt that with our spiritual nourishment we still needed refreshing and renewing. I wonder if he meant that in coming to him our spiritual hungers will always be satisfied – that we will always be provided for. With Jesus there is always daily bread; bread for today and bread for tomorrow.
What do you think? Please feel free to post your comment.
Sorry there’s no picture this week – we ate the bread before I took a photo.
Just a few thoughts from the top of my head…!
Was first struck by the idea of the miracle of the feeding of the 5 thousand, that the bread was the poorest quality. One would asume that Jesus would only give best quality. (Thought of wedding feast water into wine, plus crucially, Jesus saying to mum ‘My time has not yet come’ or words to that effect).
Think this maybe marks the change between BC and the ‘New Covenant’ where the bread is for all, ‘Best Spirtual Food’, which is for all, not only the chosen few.
Differentiation between ‘spiritual food, and nourishment’.
World’s resources are not shared fairly, but spiritual food is given to all, and since the resurrection we only have the best quality, and it’s given to all who seek.
Feel we are given enough for our needs, but do we make the most of it, or even recognise il?
Li nk with Holy Communion, and glimpse into eternity.
Dare I mention ‘Transubstantiation’? Think that there’s far too much going on here, than we have time to explore.
Maybe I’m completely on the wrong road?
All I can say is that it is an honour and a privlige to be ‘Easter People’ who already know the end of the story! How lucky we are, yet we sometimes act like the apostles and don’t ‘get it’, despite how hard Jesus tries to explain.
Sorry for ramblings… But did warn you these thoughts wre just off the top of my head!
Have a good week as we carry on our journey towards the ‘Light’!
