Youth Round-up: Mar 09

Welcome to the Youth Worker’s latest roundup looking back over the month of March.

Young Engineers – As part of my ongoing work at Bournville School I was asked to accompany four students to London to take part in the Young Engineers event, at which hundreds of young people from across the country are invited to display their creativity and ingenuity to the science and engineering industries. It was held at the QE II Exhibition Centre, just across the road from Parliament in Westminster. Dozens of prizes were on offer to those who impressed the judges and, happily, Bournville’s hard work paid off as we won the award for the best managed project in our category. We received an elegant glass trophy and £500 to be used by the school’s Young Engineers club.

Lent 09 – This Lent our youth groups, FAITH and FAITHFUL, have been making the most of the opportunity that this time of year brings to make a difference in their own lives and in the community. We have been practising different ways to ‘keep’ Lent this year – from being hospitable, praising a priest and sharing a treat to picking up litter, raising money for charity and doing the gardening! Thank you to all who made this possible and to our young people for their prayer and dedication.

Christian Aid – Christian Aid outreach worker, James Partington, was invited to speak at both FAITH and FAITHFUL during March. Through group work, videos, prayer and reflection he helped us to appreciate the plight of people throughout the world who struggle with poverty, AIDS, war and natural disaster. It was a moving experience, especially at this time of Lent, and we are looking at ways we might respond to what we heard during Christian Aid week in May.

Confirmation Groups – A number of young people have been meeting throughout Lent as part of their preparation for Confirmation, to be held on 21st June. Please continue to pray for them during this very special and important time.

Thanks for your Feedback – I am very thankful to all those who offered their thoughts and reflections on the questions I posed last month about young people and the church. If you missed February’s Youth Round-up then please visit the parish blog at and leave your comments!
