Baptisms

More Information

Baptism (or Christening) is the rite by which we are welcomed into the family of the Church, granted a share in the life-giving work of Jesus’ death and resurrection, and cleansed from sin. It is administered by the pouring of water over the person’s head, in the name of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). Once performed, it is effective for the whole of a person’s life, and need not be repeated.

It is possible to be baptised as a child or as an adult. Babies and young children are accompanied by parents and godparents who make promises on their behalf. Parents and godparents are entrusted with the role of helping children to grow in faith and to participate in the life of the Church.

People are normally baptised in their parish church or in the church that they usually attend. Baptism performed by a Church of England minister is recognised by all the other Christian denominations. At St Francis Church baptisms are held on Sunday within our 10 O’clock morning service or at a special baptism service at midday.

If you would like to arrange a Christening for yourself or your child, or if you would like further information about baptism at St Francis, please contact the Parish Office.
