Youth Round-up: Sept 2011
It's been a busy summer at St Francis Youth - here's what's happened while you've been away..!
Breathe
Almost 50 people gathered together in Ilam, Derbyshire for breathe - a "Contemporary Youth Retreat" which I help to run - and it was our busiest yet! This year alongside the usual stuff (hiking, mountain-biking) we got wet with some water based activities (raft building) and there was also a climbing wall, for those who particularly liked heights!
The theme was on Choices and we looked at King David for some inspiration. There was our usual video vote and this year it was dry enough to attempt to climb the nearby hill and practice some silence (this is always commented on as being a highlight of the week).
Sleep Out
Before the summer some of the young people came to a fundraising sleep out (kindly hosted by a local family) to raise a bit of money for the youth work here at St Francis. Over £100 has been collected and I am very grateful to those people who braved wind and rain to show their commitment to the cause!
Coffee at the Pavilion
During the summer, I squatted in a local cafe for a few hours and offered to buy any young person who turned up a drink and a catch-up chat. I was visited by 5 young people - thank you to them - although I apologise to those who had to watch me eat my lunch! I trust everyone had a good summer!
Timeless Approaches to Prayer
During the summer I had a booklet published on youth work and prayer by Grove Books Ltd. It's called Timeless Approaches to Prayer: Drawing Inspiration from Christian Tradition and is part of the Youth Series at Grove.
